The GB Snowboardcross Team’s base is in Morzine, a village situated in the Portes Du Soleil ski area. It is pretty ideal for the team as it has a snowboardcross track in the neighbouring resort of Les Gets and neighbouring resort of Avoriaz has a banked slalom, half pipe and a number of snowparks. The large varied terrain of portes du soleil covers 650KM in pistes provides a lot of areas to explore and for us to train upon. It is also very central in the Alps, so it is a good location for us to commute to competitions from and to get to from Geneva Aiport which is an hour’s drive away.
Having a base is important for the team in order to have somewhere for us to be able to relax, train and call home, unlike many competing on the European FIS Circuit we can’t be based from a home in the mountains. It is also good for us to not catch cabin fever with the big UK community found in the village, giving us chances to meet lots of friends and find part time jobs which can help us with money whilst we’re not training or competing.
Morzine has been the base of the team for the last few years and given the on snow facilities and the new sports centre we’re set to be there for the long term. It provides us a place to train on and off snow, easy access to competition resorts, relax with the many British people in resort to make friends and live a ‘normal life’, and the opportunity to find part-time jobs.
This year will be my first year based out with the team in Morzine, the last couple of years I’ve been travelling back and forth from Edinburgh for my university studies, so I’m really looking forward to it!
